It’s hard to imagine today that only 60 years ago, boarding a Greyhound bus and taking a seat next to a passenger of another race was revolutionary; an act that could leave you flat out on the pavement or at risk of fatal harm. 
But Montgomery’s Freedom Rides Museum is in the business of remembering.  
For a decade, the museum has told the stories of more than 400 young men and women, Black and white the youngest of them 13 and the oldest 22 who boarded interstate buses headed south in the summer of 1961 with a strict purpose: to compel authorities to enforce Supreme Court decisions banning segregation on buses and in transportation facilities throughout the U.S.    ....

Virtual event to use 'the power of story to tackle racial discrimination'


Sitakumari, co-founder and director of Heartstone
Schools in Lancashire will be participating alongside individuals who have won global recognition for their role in tackling racism, to mark the UN International day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The event will include stories from Lancashire’s past and the role of diverse communities in shaping the history of the area.
The online event taking place on Friday March 19 will be opened by Lord Charles Shuttleworth, Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and hosted by the co-founder of the Heartstone organisation, Sitakumari.
Heartstone is a non-profit organisation which aims to use its own access to stories – literature, photodocumentary and history - to challenge prejudice and intolerance and help to build understanding and empathy across different cultures and backgrounds. ....
