Wednesday, March 10, 2021 9:38 am Mary Anna Blair, 67, passed Sunday, March 7, 2021, in a local Cleveland health care facility. She was a lifelong member of the Church of God Sanctified of Cleveland. She attended Cleveland High School. She loved to eat, and her favorite was a cup of coffee and a coke. She loved fashion, many times changing her outfit two and three times a day. She was known by her favorite saying. Anytime she left or departed a room she would say, “Love you now.” Mary Anna was preceded in death by her parents James and Essie Blair, along with brothers and sister: William Cansler, James ‘Rico’ Blair Jr., Walter Blair and Ruth Cox. ....

Fourteen miles upstream from Rock Island, Highway 67 becomes the main street of LeClaire, Iowa, a river town founded by the Indian interpreter, Antoine LeClaire, in 1837. In the 19th century, every riverman on the Upper Mississippi would have known LeClaire. Several hundred steamboat men and rafts men wintered over here in the off season. It was the home of legendary river pilots such as Captain Walter Blair and the location of the famous Van Sant family boatyard which built the first steamboats to tow log rafts. Located at the head of the treacherous Rock Island Rapids, LeClaire was also home to forty or so rapids pilots whose sole occupation was taking steamboats safely through the rapids. ....
