Although there are ways for the seven cabins at the Walden Eco Village to get into compliance, former casita (or tiny house) resident Quinn Kelley acknowledged there was very little hope that he’d be able to return to his 140-square-foot rental. The nine similar rentals on site were not permitted, and don’t meet several criteria of the town’s building code for residences, including the 400-square-foot minimum for studio or one-bedroom residences. Casita renters paid about $445 a month to rent small rooms with propane heat and electricity, and used a communal building on site for kitchen, bathroom, shower, and laundry facilities. Officials disconnected the propane and electricity to all casitas last Wednesday after witnessing several safety hazards. ....

The 25 former tenants of the Walden Eco Village are readjusting in various living arrangements just over a week after being given five days to vacate their rentals on Garland Way in Peterborough.
Casita resident Quinn Kelley said he spent a couple days in a rental in Greenfield before returning to Strafford, his home town, to rent a space in a family friend’s house.
“Don’t know if it’s the grief, or what, but being isolated in Greenfield after all this was really hard,” he said, and that he realized he needed to be around family and friends. “Frankly, the loss of this community as a support system has been devastating. It kind of snuck up on me,” he said. “I was so focused on the next step and everyone’s feet were being held so close to the fire that nobody really had a chance to process the situation together, let alone say good bye,” he said. Kelley, a ConVal School District employee ....

Peterborough has upheld its order that all 25 tenants of the Walden Eco Village must evacuate by Wednesday.
The ruling came despite appeals from tenants, community members, and an ultimately failed attempt at a temporary fix by the landlord, Akhil Garland, who represents the owning entity the Garland Family Realty Trust.
The Walden Eco Village was founded about 12 years ago, residents say, and is comprised of a series of cottages and casitas, or 140 square foot tiny houses, around a village green. Some residents live in cottages equipped with bathrooms and kitchens, and others in smaller rentals use a community building for kitchen, bathroom, shower, and laundry facilities. Tenants pay between $445 and $1,400 a month depending on a rental’s size and amenities. ....
