By May 11, 2021 You can t walk far in North Beach without running into a pizzeria or an Italian deli, but locals, especially the multi-generational Italian families who ve lived here for decades, remember the many lost bread bakeries of yore. For the past two years, famed neighborhood pizzaiolo Tony Gemignani has been working on his own bakery concept with the hope of returning European baking traditions to North Beach. Before Highland Tap & Burger and Uncle moved into a row of storefronts at West 32nd Avenue and Vallejo Street, there was a divey Mexican bar and taqueria on the block called Aztec Sol. It was a little rough, the kind of place where fists might fly if you didn t follow the proper pool table etiquette. But the tacos were great, and the selection of tequila rivaled anywhere in town at the time even the fancy gringo places. And you don t even have to look back a decade (Aztec Sol closed in 2011) to remember nearby Dickinson Plaza, home to a couple of local sandwich and coffee shops, among other retail endeavors. Dickinson Plaza was purchased and torn down in 2016, displacing Fat Jack s Subs, Laughing Latte and Mary Jane s Pizza in the process, and a new mixed-use development arose in its place. New shops, bars and cafes moved in, including Lady Jane (a great cocktail bar, if far fancier than any of its predecessors), Method Collective (an outpost of a locally owned coffee roast ....
One funding door is closing for a key, proposed Napa Valley Vine Trail segment through the heart of scenic wine country, but others are possibly opening. Local transportation officials had hoped to secure a $10 million state Active Transportation Program grant toward the $16 million extension of the trail between Yountville and St. Helena. Then bikers and walkers might have been able to use the new path as soon as 2026. But the project, covering 8.2 miles, failed in February to secure the grant with round one of the funding. Now it looks like the same negative result for round two. Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) staff is recommending eight projects receive a total of $37 million and the Vine Trail isnât one of them. Itâs not even on the contingency list. ....
