Let me first begin my lecture with giving thanks to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. A Creator that is called by many ancient names in this world, such as Yahweh, God, Allah, Dios, and Olodumare. But the oldest name for the Creator in human history is Amen-Ra. This word Amen-Ra for the Creator of the heavens and the earth comes from the Afrikan Nile Valley Civilization called ancient Kemet-known to the world as Egypt. Amen-Ra comes the world’s first writing system called the Medu Neter. Europeans and Arabs call it Hieroglyphics. Amen-Ra means the hidden one, the unseen one, the prime mover of the universe and all living things. That might be too deep for some people, but this is Black History Month. Toby Wilkinson s colorful new book is a study of Egyptology between the first decipherment of hieroglyphics in 1822, and Howard Carter s discovery of Tutankhamun s tomb (right), 100 years later, said James McConnachie in The Sunday Times. This period, known as the “Golden Age” of Egyptology, could “also be regarded as a very dark age indeed” - a time of plunder and skulduggery in which the world s most powerful nations vied to rob Egypt s artefacts.

These letters are often expressed in language of extreme abasement. The puppet ruler of Gezer, in present-day Israel, wrote: “To the king, my lord, my god, my Sun, the Sun of heaven: Message of Yapahu, your servant, the dirt at your feet. I fall at the feet of the king, my lord, my god, my Sun, seven times and seven times.”

In contrast, the letters written by the pharaoh’s equals, rulers of the great regional powers, are careful how and when they demonstrate that they are on more equal footing. Scholars sometimes refer to the main regional powers of this time as the “Great Powers Club,” which at this time consisted of Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria, Mitanni (centered in modern southeastern Turkey), and “Hatti,” the Hittite empire. Another member of the club was Alashiya, the island of Cyprus. While geographically small, the island nation was economically powerful thanks to its copper reserves. (
