SOUTHERN WATER ALLIANCE
Councillors will vote at Wednesday’s meeting on whether to join the new Southern Inland Queensland and Northern NSW Border Regional Water Alliance Limited.
Based on discussions at the group’s second meeting in February, it was decided the best way to achieve tangible long-term water security and infrastructure was to form a company limited by guarantee.
SDRC will this week vote on becoming a member of the company and appointing the Mayor as a director.
It is understood the alliance would not have budgetary implications until the 2021-22 financial year.
YOUTH EVENTS FIRE UP
Minutes from the first meeting of the 2021 Southern Downs Youth Council will also be discussed at the SDRC meeting on Wednesday.

One of the Rose City’s biggest and most famous events is making its triumphant return to the events calendar in 2021, with a huge range of spectacles locked in.
The Warwick Show will open its gates on March 19-20, welcoming hundreds of producers, entertainers, rodeo competitors, and eager visitors back through its gates after the shock cancellation of the 2020 event.
For Show and Rodeo Society events co-ordinator Teilah McKelvey, seeing the event return with both old favourites and exciting new sections was a thrill for organisers and the community alike.
“We’ve got all of our traditional sections – your cooking, art, stud cattle, all of those things,” Mrs McKelvey said.
Councillor Cameron Gow was one of the most vocal in favour of the request, contending the tourism benefits would outweigh any costs of the water.
“If Warwick Polocrosse can’t access this water, it’s potentially another event cancelled so people won’t visit our region, which flows onto our tourism operators,” Cr Gow said.
He was met with fierce opposition by councillors Andrew Gale, Ross Bartley, and Stephen Tancred, who all agreed the region’s drought status was too “desperate” to offer extra water to a sporting organisation.
“I cannot, in the current dire circumstances we find ourselves, to allow the use of any water that is capable of being treated to a drinking standard to be utilised for watering grass,” Cr Gale agreed.
