Jackson, Mississippi water crisis: Many residents still have no water

Stainless steel pots, a faded-orange wheelbarrow and a 5-gallon container sitting on Barbara Howard’s back porch brim with rainwater. She’s strategically placed them under the roof, letting the light Monday rain gather and then fall into the vessels more effectively.
She grabs a stock pot by its handles and pours it into a nearby trashcan. From there, she’ll scoop out water with a sauce pot to fill her toilet.
A gallon-and-a-half is needed for a single flush. Her Sunday night and Monday collection are enough to last her for the next two days. For Howard, slugging water back and forth from distribution sites is more time-consuming than her newest method. ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Food Lion has officially opened in Albany with three locations. We’re told they could help end food deserts in the city.
On Wednesday, the Food Justice Coalition told WALB their fight is not over.
Food Lion replaced the Harvey’s Grocery Store locations in Albany.
“They are just replacing the Harvey’s that were here before. Of course, that puts us in the same position that we were when we started this work. There still only one grocery store for the entire south side of Albany,” Commissioner Demetris Young said. ....

Some bridges reopen, access for wards east of Anacostia River

WASHINGTON In a change of course, the Secret Service reopened a handful of bridges to local traffic only following concerns from residents and community leaders in Wards 7 and 8.
For the nearly 150,000 D.C. residents east of the Anacostia River, there are three grocery stores and no trauma center available. That’s why certain bridges like the 11th Street bridge connecting downtown Anacostia to Navy Yard, are lifelines.
“The fact that they have allowed us to have this access, I think, is a good thing,” Troy Prestwood, the president of the Ward 8 Democrats, said. I think it should have been more transparent from the beginning.” ....

A Sad End to a Long Chapter of Hollywood in Linden Sq.

The Revere Journal asked Ward 6 Councilor Richard Serino – the councilor for the ward in which Showcase Cinemas is located – for his thoughts on the closing of the famed movie theater complex at 565 Squire Road, Revere, and the future plans for a new Amazon distribution center for the site. Councilor Serino wrote the following comments:
“With the closing of Showcase Cinemas, it’s a sad end for a long chapter of Hollywood in Linden Square. From a drive-in to a movie theater where my parents took me to see my very first movie to seeing ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’ and ‘George of the Jungle,’ with my mom to now the ‘new’ Showcase that was built in 2000 where I saw all the Harry Potter movies and where I would take my younger cousins to see the LEGO movies, I will certainly miss Showcase Cinemas. ....

BAKERSFIELD, Ca. - Today the Bakersfield City Council will officially welcome two new faces as the city holds its swearing in ceremony.
Eric Arias in Ward One and Patty Gray in Ward Six will join the city council, this after winning their seats in the general election.
The two will be joined by incumbents Andrae Gonzales and Bruce Freeman, they ran unopposed and were reelected in November.
The swearing in will take place at today s city council meeting starting at 5:15 p.m. ....
