Vaccinations begin as COVID cases inch upward

While California remains one of the hotbeds for COVID-19 in the nation, Del Norte County and much of Northern California are bucking the trend.
Cases continue to climb in Del Norte County, with 70 new cases reported in the last two weeks and six new cases reported Tuesday. But the vast majority are recovering with few problems, according to information released by Del Norte County Public Health.
There are currently 126 active cases in the county, with three people in the hospital. Since the pandemic began in March, two people with the virus have died in the county.
While the majority of California remains in place with stay-at-home orders, there is a little more freedom in Northern California. Last year, the state was broken into regions, with rules in place saying each region would be ordered to stay at home as soon as ICU capacity in the region fell below 15 percent. ....

Del Norte County s public health officer issued a call-out Wednesday for volunteers to help with distributing the COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Warren Rehwaldt s community bulletin, the first for 2021, comes after he described a logistical challenge over ensuring there is enough to give those who received the Pfizer shot just before Christmas their second dose within the next few days.
Of the nearly 650 doses of both the Pfizer and Moderna innoculations Del Norte County has received in its initial allotments, about 200 are left, Rehwaldt told the ....

Council gets some good news on COVID

As COVID-19 cases continue to climb in Crescent City, the city council received a dose of good news Monday.
Mitch Hanna, the CEO of Sutter Coast Hospital, said the increased cases has not caused a problem at the hospital, yet, and he also shared that the first medical staff at the hospital received vaccinations Monday.
Hanna said getting the process of vaccinations started was a big step forward. He said 29 people were vaccinated Monday, and he expected another 30 to be vaccinated Tuesday.
“This will be a process over the next month or two,” Hanna said. “We are currently using the Pfizer vaccine.” ....

Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory staff member Alyssa McCloud catalogs incoming tests
In a draft of a rare joint statement, the Rural Association of Northern California Health Officers likens the current state of COVID-19 to a wildfire engulfing the entire region and urges residents to redouble efforts to curb the virus spread, warning if they wait for further state restrictions it may be too late.
While the statement is reportedly still being finalized, Del Norte Health Officer Warren Rehwaldt included its draft in a Dec. 18 letter to county residents.
The Northern California region remains the only in California not subject to the stay-at-home order issued by the state for regions where cumulative hospital intensive care capacity falls below 15 percent. As of Dec. 22, the 11 counties in Northern California have a combined 29.5 percent available ICU capacity, according to the state, despite escalating case counts but the health officers warn the region has a l ....

(Updated) Public Health Couriers Fetch Del Norte s First COVID-19 Vaccine Doses From Humboldt, Distributes Them To Hospital, Skilled Nursing Staff
Del Norte’s first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine trickled into the county and was distributed to the local hospital and skilled nursing facility Monday.
But because the Pfizer vaccine has to be stored at extremely cold temperatures, Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt and other Public Health Branch staff had to go to Humboldt County to fetch the first portion of the county’s allocation.
To make good use of the doses it has, the Public Health Branch delivered the vaccine to a few other key people “further down the list,” in addition to staff at Sutter Coast Hospital and Lantern Health Crescent City, Rehwaldt told the ....
