Video may have killed the radio star, but video games are proving crucial lifelines for the current generation of musicians.
Of course, from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater to FIFA and beyond, music has long played a key role in soundtracking gaming. But – as anyone who’s tried to prise a teenager away from their Xbox during the lock, hard weeks of lockdown can tell you – the two media are converging, as games and music contrive to build ever more immersive experiences.

In May last year, MBW discovered that Sony Music was building a team “dedicated to reimagining music through immersive media”. Said team would be using Unreal Engine, the games engine from Fortnite maker Epic Games, in which Sony Corporationacquired a minority stake last July, making a strategic investment of $250 million.

Today (January 12), Sony Corporation of America has announced a new subsidiary called Sony Immersive Music Studios, which is focused on “developing immersive music experiences through the power of creativity and technology”.
The division is led by digital entertainment veteran Brad Spahr, who according to Sony is “an award-winning developer of next-generation experiences at the intersection of music, immersive reality, and gaming”.
