Vanderbilt hospital road renamed for Black surgery pioneer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A road leading to Vanderbilt University Medical Center is now named for a Black pioneer in cardiac surgery, instead of bearing the Confederacy-tied moniker of Dixie Place.
Officials in Nashville commemorated the name change to Vivien Thomas Way during an event Monday.
In a news release, the hospital said the switch resulted from current second-year Vanderbilt University School of Medicine students brainstorming with college mentors last summer about creating change amid the civil unrest nationwide over the death of George Floyd.
Medical school professor Walter Clair, a mentor and the vice chair for diversity and inclusion in the school s Department of Medicine, suggested the name change. He noted to students that the last stoplight he had to drive through before parking in a garage at work was on Dixie Place. ....

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The LSU Tigers fought hard in the third game of the series against No. 1 Vanderbilt, but ultimately could not get the clutch hit when they needed it and have fallen to 1-8 in Southeastern Conference.
Vanderbilt (23-4, 8-1 SEC) continued to flex their muscles against LSU (17-11, 1-8 SEC) as they swept the Tigers in a 5-4 win on Saturday, April 3. Although it wasn’t quite the scores the previous two games were the Commodores showed they could win close games. ....

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Everything that could possibly go wrong for No. 25 LSU did in the second game against No. 1 Vanderbilt as they dominated the Tigers 11-2.
Not only did LSU fall to 1-7 in Southeastern Conference play they also lost starting pitcher Jaden Hill in the second inning after only throwing 34 pitches. Head coach Paul Mainieri stated that they would have Hill evaluated on Monday.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - No. 25 LSU got off to a rough start to begin the weekend series against No. 1 Vanderbilt in the third weekend of Southeastern Conference play.
The Tigers (17-9, 1-6 SEC) gave up 13 runs on 17 hits and had two errors. LSU was competitive to start the game through the first four innings against the Commodores (21-4, 6-1 SEC), as they only trailed 1-0 entering the top of the fifth inning.
