REGIONALâBig changes to state gun laws will only create small impacts in NâWest Iowa, according to firearm instructors and law enforcement officials. While Iowans will no longer need a permit to purchase and carry handguns, those without a permit still have to pass the federal background check to buy a gun at a store and the policy would only apply within state borders. Because Iowa already has lax firearm regulations, area firearm trainers and law-enforcement officials said they do not expect much to change. âThere are guns everywhere. There are a lot of gun permits that have been issued. We issue lots of them,â said Lyon County sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep. âThe ones that are getting gun permits, theyâre law-abiding citizens who are not trouble.â ....
Speeding Car Crashes Through Roof of Larchwood, Iowa Home A speeding car crashed through the roof of a home in Larchwood, Iowa, on Tuesday night. Dakota News Now is reporting the accident that took place around 10:30 PM on Tuesday (February 2) inside a home located just off Highway 9 and Chestnut street. Those who witnessed the incident first hand admit they have never seen anything like it before, especially in this small-town Larchwood neighborhood. Speeding cars in the neighborhood are nothing new, according to those who live there. Speeding cars that go airborne, now that s a different story. Lyon County Sheriff, Stewart Vander Stoep, told Dakota News Now they estimate the vehicle was traveling at speeds in excess of 115 mph before the crash occurred. ....
February 3, 2021 Larchwood, Iowa A Sioux Falls man was taken to the hospital after a freak accident in Larchwood on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 10:20 p.m., 25-year-old Irrael Hildalgo of Sioux Falls was driving a 2013 Toyota northbound on Highway 9 in Larchwood. Westbound Highway 9 jogs north for one mile and at the point of the accident, curves back west. Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep tells us more. (as said:) “Completely missed the curve and ended up in the roof of a house. It catapulted off the road and into a ditch and then into the house. It landed on the roof. The car basically went through the roof and then inside the house. Speed was definitely a factor in it, of course, and the house is pretty much totaled. The car is in bad shape. Thankfully no major injuries. The person walked away. He was sent to the hospital, but he’s since been released.” ....
January 19, 2021 Parker, SD A Spencer, Iowa man has been arrested near Parker, South Dakota on several charges after a pursuit that started in Lyon County, Iowa. According to the Lincoln County, South Dakota Sheriff’s Office, their involvement in the pursuit came when they were made aware of a stolen gray Mitsubishi Outlander being driven near Klondike on Iowa’s 180th Street or A26. (That’s a little more than four and a half miles west of the West Lyon School.) Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep says the car was being tracked by a tracking device and his deputies had been alerted to the vehicle’s presence by South Dakota authorities. ....
