Seymour Arthur Izzard died aged 89 after an impressive lifetime of smashing cross country marathons and inspiring younger athletes at the Woodside Stadium. He joined the Watford Harriers in 1948, which then kickstarted a series of achievements, ranging from representing the Royal Signals in cross country races in Catterick and Germany and becoming the Herts County Vets 10-mile and 20-mile road champion. Watford Harriers, which has been running since 1925, has been one of the leading road running clubs and has helped train many junior athletes in the area. Born in October 1931, it was not until 1948 that Mr Izzard joined the Watford Harriers and began his legacy at the club. Seymour at Cassiobury Park in 1955 Just a year after being part of the Watford Harriers, the former chairman entered and won the Herts County Youth cross country ‘Watford’ title, along the Herts County versus Queen Elizabeth School 1-mile race. ....

An athletics club based at a stadium in Watford opened by the Duke of Edinburgh has paid a touching tribute to him ahead of his funeral. After 73 years of marriage, the Queen will say farewell to Prince Philip during a televised funeral service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle this afternoon, attended by a small group of close family and friends. Covid regulations have reduced the scope of the service with public elements cancelled, mourners reduced from around 800 to just 30, and all guests wearing face masks and sitting apart. Watford Harriers Athletics Club, which holds events at Woodside Stadium, says it is “proud” of the legacy left in the town by Prince Philip, who was invited to open the arena in 1955. ....
