City Heights Rent Control Protest

At the site of an uninhabitable apartment building in City Heights, where new management has increased rent by upward of $700 in recent months, local residents and tenants rights activists gathered last Friday to bring attention to the issue of quickly rising rent prices in underserved communities and to call on City Council to take action on a rent control ordinance to cap yearly increases to 2%.
The approximately 100 attendees held a rally outside the property on 4812 49th Street and then marched through the streets of City Heights, along Orange Avenue and looping back to their starting point through El Cajon Boulevard. ....

As hard as it may be to believe now, 2020 began brimming with positive news for Cambridge. Two of the University’s former students, Kayla Barron and Dr Jenni Sidey-Gibbons, graduated from NASA’s Artemis programme. This put them firmly on the path to becoming the first women on the moon, expected to land in 2024. ....

“Universities have turned into landlords”: UK students plan biggest rent strike in 40 years
Students from at least 20 universities across Britain are planning to to go on rent strike when they return from the Christmas break –
unless their universities agree to negotiate on rent reductions. They insist that they should not be made to pay premium rates. Es
pecially in the midst of a pandemic, when in-person teaching and campus life is so limited.
In November, there were successful mass strikes, leading the University of Manchester to reduce halls rent by 30 per cent for the autumn term. The success of campaigns so far has created a movement across the UK. At least 20 rent strikes are currently underway or being organised on campuses. Hundreds of students at universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Sussex, Goldsmiths, and Edinburgh are preparing to take action in 2021.
