Discussion on feral cats dominates Brownwood City Council meeting Brownwood Bulletin A discussion on dealing with Brownwood’s feral cat population particularly the colony of 20 to 25 at Riverside Park dominated the Brownwood City Council meeting Tuesday morning and included comments from numerous audience members. “It came to our attention several months ago that we had people building structures inside our city parks for the cats, along with feeding the cats on a regular basis,” Mayor Stephen Haynes said in opening the discussion. Council members took no action following the two-hour discussion. The city is getting “tons of complaints” about feral cats in Riverside and other parks, with issues including cat waste being deposited around the playground equipment, Haynes said. ....

A more than two-hour discussion that drifted back and forth from the Riverside Park situation to the entire city itself occurred and featured multiple contentious moments. The Brownwood City Council on Tuesday, February 9, unanimously approved an ordinance on second and third/final reading for a request to change the zoning classification at 2409 Austin Avenue from R-1 Single-Family Residential District to R-3 Multifamily Residential District. At the Council meeting on Jan. 26, the Council heard protests to the zoning change from members of the public. Upon hearing from the residents and the developer, the Council voted to approve the zoning change on first reading in order to give the residents the chance to meet and visit with the developer about the proposed project. Much of the Brownwood City Council meeting on Tuesday morning was devoted to a discussion about Brownwood’s feral cat population. For 90 minutes, representatives of the Corrine T. Smith Animal Shelter and Council members discussed an increasing number of feral cats. Speaking on behalf of the CTSAS was Leona Cleveland, director. She was joined by Tami Rodgers with Feral Friday and Monica Frenden of American Pets Alive in Austin. “I don’t think a person who lives in the city limits who has unwanted cats is being unreasonable in asking us to remove them,” said Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes. “When we remove that animal and then it comes back to the same location in a few days, I don’t think we’re addressing that problem.” ....
