Currently, all the carmakers undertake a mandatory recall to fix issues in a vehicle and this decision can be on the basis of complaints received or internal findings. However, the new rules by the government will make it compulsory for an automaker to recall vehicles if certain criteria are met. Govt notifies vehicle recall policy, to be effective April 1 March 16, 2021 Can impose fine ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹100 lakh The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has notified on March 12 the vehicle recall policy for manufacturers which will come into effect from April 1. According to the policy, depending on the number and types of vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, among others) that have to be recalled, the Government can impose fine of up to ₹10 lakh, ₹20 lakh, ₹50 lakh or ₹100 lakh. “The vehicle manufacturer has to pay this amount to the Government for each such bunch of defective vehicles,” an official told BusinessLine. The Ministry had issued draft notification for vehicle recall policy mid-last year.
