The black American poet – Langston Hughes – might very well have been describing the relationship between our Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its fellow predominantlyEnglish-speaking Western Hemisphere nations of Canada and the United States of America (USA), when he penned the following lines :-
“I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes…”
You see, there were three poles of British colonization in the Western Hemisphere: namely, the English-speaking colonies of “lower” North America that formed themselves into the United States of America; the English-speaking colonies of “upper” North America that were consolidated into the Confederation of Canada; and t
I AM writing in view of the critical elections immediately ahead, hoping that all of us may see through the smokescreen that is hiding the real issues that are at stake. It is obvious that the nationalist parties can’t even see eye to eye, but worse than that, they can’t even control their administration. There is a massive black hole in their finances – money pours in from the UK Treasury, but where does it go? There is a serious lack of transparency in so many areas of the current administration. Much could be said, but a few frightening facts will suffice to illustrate the concerns of intelligent people.
