CAAMFest 2021 will be taking place May 13-23, 2021 for 11 days of exciting Asian American storytelling, with programs you can enjoy at the drive-in or in your living room! During opening weekend, CAAM will present three evenings of drive-in presentations at Fort Mason Flix. Opening with two screenings of Try Harder!, director Debbie Lum s documentary about San Francisco s Lowell High School, the weekend also highlights the diverse Filipino American experience, with Dante Basco s feature film directorial debut The Fabulous Filipino Brothers and Lumpia With a Vengeance, directed by Patricio Ginelsa. Hong Kong Breakdancers Set Sights On The 2024 Olympic Games


Night falls in Hung Hom and factory buildings go dark unit by unit. The graffiti-covered rooftop of the otherwise nondescript Focal Industrial Centre sets the stage for a group of young men, who arrive in hoodies and baseball caps and greet each other with bumped fists, their faces lit only by their cigarettes. As music begins to pulse from a portable speaker, shadowy figures suddenly become animated, legs twirling upwards, limbs twisting and heads pivoting on the floor in chaotic choreography.
Among them are Kwan Man-chun, who goes by ET; Joe Chong, whose stage name is Fat Joe; and the performer Bomhead, who refuses to reveal his real name. They are the core members of Buddy Crew, a Hong Kong breakdancing group set up in 2001 which now has 40 members, all of whom are known by stage names tied to their individual personalities. After a year’s hiatus because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Pacific Arts Movement’s Spring Showcase of films celebrating Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander identity is back.
The festival, which begins tomorrow and runs through May 2, returns at a time when, says Pacific Arts Movement Artistic Director Brian Hu, “More now than in a generation eyes are on the Asian American community in many ways.”
