[The following report is from our sister publication, The Stranger , in Seattle. eds.] The Seattle Police Department entered Cal Anderson Park at 7:35 a.m. on Friday morning and gave a 15-minute warning for protesters and the residents of a homeless encampment to vacate the park and remove their belongings. Bike cops stationed on the north end of the park faced off against protesters while another troop of SPD officers came in from the south end, closer to the main encampment. After around 30 minutes of stand-offs with protesters, police cleared 11th Avenue and allowed Seattle Parks and Recreation vehicles to enter the encampment and start cleaning the area. ....

Police at the scene were met with protesters. It was a tense morning at Cal Anderson Park. Unlike an unsuccessful sweep earlier this week, city crews moved through Cal Anderson Park and tents and debris were cleared from the area. Police broke through a barricade that was erected along the camp to gain access to the park. A few small skirmishes broke out. According to the Seattle Police Department, 21 people were arrested. Protesters present at the time helped residents move their belongings and tents. ....

Instead, they city put the sweep on hold because a homeless person who has been living in the park filed a request for a restraining order. The city wanted to wait for the judge to issue his decision before moving forward. Yesterday the judge did issue his decision, refusing to issue a restraining order. The judge’s order is here. He completely rejected her argument that the tents in the park constituted political speech and were being singled out because the city opposed that speech. The decision states, “…there is no evidence that the intended evictions are based on the content of Ms. Yeager’s supposed expressive speech.” He also dismisses her arguments under the 4th, 8th and 14th Amendments.
