• Parents of slain journalist term ruling ‘travesty of justice’ • White House firm on securing justice for Pearl’s family ISLAMABAD: By a majority of two to one, the Supreme Court acquitted on Thursday Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh, the principal accused in murder of Wall Street Journal’s bureau chief for South Asia Daniel Pearl, by extending the benefit of the doubt to him. Headed by Justice Mushir Alam, a three-judge Supreme Court bench also comprising Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Yahya Afridi ordered that Mr Sheikh, Fahad Naseem Ahmed, Syed Salman Saqib and Shaikh Muhammad Adil be set free forthwith, if not required to be detained in connection with any other case. AP ISLAMABAD: The counsel for parents of Daniel Pearl on Wednesday referred to a July 25, 2019, letter in which the principal accused, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, had conceded his minor role in the US journalist’s murder. The letter, presented before the Supreme Court by counsel Faisal Siddiqui, was addressed to the Sindh High Court. The accused had acknowledged that his role in the issue was relatively minor and did not warrant death sentence or even the amount of time he had already served in prison, mostly in solitary confinement.
