WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD: The new Secretary of State Antony Blinken has declared that the US is prepared to prosecute Omar Shaikh in the US for allegedly kidnapping and killing Daniel Pearl.
In a strong worded statement, Secretary Blinken termed the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan to release Omar Shaikh as an affront to terrorism victims everywhere, including Pakistan. The United States is deeply concerned by the Pakistani Supreme Court’s decision to acquit those involved in Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping and murder and any proposed action to release them. Ahmad Omar Saeed Shaikh was indicted in the United States in 2002 for hostage-taking and conspiracy to commit hostage-taking, resulting in the murder of Pearl, the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal, as well as the 1994 kidnapping of another United States citizen in India,” the statement said. In his first statement on Pakistan as the United States secretary of state, Antony Blinken said America was ready to prosecute Omar Saeed Sheikh the principal accused in the 2002 beheading of American journalist Daniel Pearl in US courts, a day after he was acquitted by the Supreme Court.
On Thursday, a three-judge Supreme Court bench acquitted Sheikh by extending the benefit of the doubt to him and ordered his release. The Supreme Court issued the verdict on a petition filed by the Sindh government and Pearl’s parents against a Sindh High Court (SHC) order for Sheikh’s acquittal and immediate release.

The federal government intends to formally join the review proceedings initiated by the Sindh government against the Supreme Court s acquittal of the accused in the murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl.
A spokesman of the Attorney General of Pakistan on Saturday announced that the federal government will also be filing an appropriate application before the Supreme Court to be allowed to join as a party in the proceedings and further seek review and recall of the apex court s Jan 28 judgement.

ISLAMABAD: By a majority of two to one, the Supreme Court acquitted on Thursday Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh, the principal accused in murder of Wall Street Journal’s bureau chief for South Asia Daniel Pearl, by extending the benefit of the doubt to him.
Headed by Justice Mushir Alam, a three-judge Supreme Court bench also comprising Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Yahya Afridi ordered that Mr Sheikh, Fahad Naseem Ahmed, Syed Salman Saqib and Shaikh Muhammad Adil be set free forthwith, if not required to be detained in connection with any other case.
