Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued the following announcement on July 15.
Surrounded by sponsoring lawmakers, criminal justice reform advocates and a victim of wrongful conviction, Governor JB Pritzker signed a package of nation-leading legislation that puts Illinois at the forefront of the work to bring about true reform to the state s justice system.
An essential tenet of good governance is recognizing the need to change the laws that have failed the people they serve. My administration has infused that value into everything we do, said Governor JB Pritzker. The four bills I m signing advance the rights of some of our most vulnerable in our justice system and put Illinois at the forefront of the work to bring about true reform. Together, these initiatives move us closer to a holistic criminal justice system, one that builds confidence and trust in a system that has done harm to too many people for far too long. ....

Illinois bans law enforcement from lying to minors during interrogations
Illinois has in recent years uncovered at least 100 wrongful convictions based on false confessions, 31 of them involving people under 18 years of age.

WASHINGTON Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill Thursday making Illinois the first state to ban law enforcement officers from lying to minors during interrogations a practice that adds significantly to the risk of false confessions and wrongful convictions.  
If someone in law enforcement knowingly engages in deception during an interrogation, statements from the youth suspect would be inadmissible in court, according to the bill, which takes effect at the start of next year.  ....
