Businesses close, ice runs out as temperatures hit 40 C in Greater Victoria


“It looks like another record-breaking day for the Island because these temperatures are so out of whack, so above what the records generally are, especially for coastal areas,” said meteorologist Terri Lang of Environment and Climate Change Canada, noting the heat is going to shift slightly inland and eastward.
The low Monday night is expected to be 17 C, while Tuesday’s forecast high is 29.
“It’s going to feel a lot different,” said Lang. “Even though 29 is still quite warm … relative to 40 C, it’s going to feel good.”
The heat might be around a little longer on the upper east side of Vancouver Island, depending on when the surge of cooler air comes through, he said. ....

Health warnings issued amid heat; cooling expected overnight


Cooling centres have opened in Victoria and Sidney to help people beat the heat. The Victoria HarbourCats baseball team is inviting people to visit their air-conditioned office at 1814 Vancouver St. to cool off with water and a snack.
The Shoal Centre in Sidney is also inviting people to cool off in their centre at 10030 Resthaven Dr. The community hub for seniors is operating as a cooling centre from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m Monday and Tuesday. The sweltering heat proved too much for many local restaurants. The Blue Fox, the Bent Mast, Rumrunner, Milestones, John’s Place, Mary’s Bleue Moon, The Mint, Bucky’s, Lido, Shine and others closed their doors. ....

Oak Bay, James Bay restaurants temporarily close due to COVID-19 exposures

Three Greater Victoria eateries have temporarily shuttered their doors due to COVID-19 exposures that occurred last week.
The Penny Farthing Pub in Oak Bay, alongside the adjacent Vis-à-Vis restaurant and The Bent Mast restaurant in James Bay have voluntarily closed due to exposures.
According to the Penny Farthing, the pub was notified of the exposure on Friday by Island Health. Shortly after, the pub said it would close until Wednesday so that the building could undergo a professional deep clean.
The pub says that Island Health did not consider the exposure to pose a high-risk to the public. ....
