Your support of our work is inspiring and invaluable. Weakening Gulf Stream May Disrupt World Weather The Gulf Stream is growing feebler, the Arctic seas are gaining fresh water. Together they could affect the world’s weather. By Tim Radford The Atlantic Conveyer, otherwise the Gulf Stream − that great flow of surface water pouring northwards that overturns in the Arctic and heads south again at great depth − is now weaker than at any point in the last 1,000 years, European scientists report.

When temperatures do odd things : How this map reveals a warning for the climate

When temperatures do odd things. : How this map reveals a warning for the climate By Jeff Berardelli NOAA releases new climate normals No matter how you display it, for decades climate data has conveyed the clear and consistent trend of a rapidly warming Earth. But how a climate scientist chooses to visualize that data can really help to communicate vital clues about the climate system. Recently, Ed Hawkins, the professor who created the now famous Warming Stripes visualization (read more about that here), from the University of Reading in the U.K., tweeted out a clever and eye-opening map, with shades of red and blue representing the amount of warming relative to other parts of the Earth.

Health Check for the Atlantic on the Ocean Climate Survey

20th April 2021 Oceanographic sampling from the RV Celtic Explorer with a CTD/rosette. A CTD measures conductivity (which helps determine salinity), temperature and depth Credit: Tomasz Szumski Scientists from the Marine Institute, Maynooth University and the National University of Ireland Galway were recently aboard the RV Celtic Explorer, for a 14-day scientific survey studying the shelf and deep water off the west coast of Ireland. This Marine Institute’s annual ocean climate survey has been running since 2006 and facilitates long-term physical and biogeochemical observations of the deepwater environment in the South Rockall Trough. The Rockall Trough is an important region that provides a pathway for the transport of heat and salt from the North-East Atlantic to the Nordic Seas, where waters are subjected to phenomena such as deep convective mixing that creates cold dense water. Water exchange and interactions in the Rockall Trough play a fundamental part in the overall th
