Bay Area Legal Services virtually swears in new officers


THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT BAY AREA LEGAL SERVICES held a virtual swearing-in ceremony at their most recent quarterly meeting. Judge Jessica Costello swore in the following officers for the 2021 year: Yohance A. Petts, chair; Andrew M. O’Malley, chair-elect; Tori C. Simmons, treasurer; and Sarah Lahlou-Amine, secretary. Pettis is an assistant U.S. attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. He has been involved for several years with Bay Area Legal Services though The Collective, as well as serving on the Audit Committee, Stewardship Committee, and Sustaining Law Firm Committee. ....

With steady work as an accountant, Stephanie never thought she’d be homeless. Like many Floridians, however, she found herself unemployed thanks to the pandemic. She was able to stretch her savings for several months, but she reached a point where she could no longer pay her rent. When her landlord filed for eviction, not only would she lose her home, she would also have an eviction on her record, discouraging other landlords from renting to her even once she was back to work. ....

Commenters criticize proposed IOTA rule amendments

Recommendations to change how The Florida Bar Foundation collects and distributes IOTA funds should be rejected or replaced by an alternative proposal, according to comments filed with the Florida Supreme Court.
February 10 was the deadline to comment on proposed changes to Florida Bar Rule 5-1.1(g), which governs the IOTA program. The amendments were submitted last September by the court’s Task Force on the Distribution of IOTA Funds.
A group of 26 past Foundation presidents submitted a “consensus” alternative rule that they said was endorsed by all of the other rule commenters. A group of 34 past Bar presidents specifically endorsed that alternative as well as comments from the Business Law Section, ....
