Mitchell and Phillips offered Black Caps contracts for first time

The pair are the only new faces on the 20 strong national contract list, with the players nominated having until May 22 to accept or decline their offers.
Mitchell scored his maiden Test and ODI centuries and played for the Black Caps in all three formats this international summer, while Phillips starred in the T20s, scoring 366 runs at a 40.6 average, including a thrilling 46-ball century against the West Indies at Bay Oval in November - the fastest by a New Zealander in T20I history.
Test specialist and spinner Ajaz Patel has not been offered a New Zealand contract for the coming season after coming onto the list for the first time last year, while BJ Watling has also been omitted after confirming his impending retirement from all cricket. ....

A key cog in New Zealand s test match team for the best part of a decade, the wicketkeeper-batsman has announced his retirement from all cricket after the upcoming tour to England.
Black Caps contracts for the 2021-22 season were set to be released on Friday and with Watling set to be absent from that list, the time had come to reveal the news.
The 35-year-old, who had recently become a father for the second time, settled on the call to retire at the end of the just-completed home summer.

Auckland [New Zealand], May 11 (ANI): New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday announced that wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling will be retiring from international cricket after the tour of England.
The 35-year-old has been a stalwart of the Test side since debuting in 2009 as an opening batsman, going on to establish himself as a world-class keeper-batsman and claiming numerous records in his 73 Tests to date.
With the BlackCaps contracts for the 2021-22 season due to be released on Friday, in which Watling will not be included due to his future unavailability, his retirement news was expedited.
The Northern Districts gloveman had been pondering his options for a while, but settled on his decision to retire at the end of the just-completed home summer. ....
