Petition calls for further academic accommodations in response to COVID-19

Photo:  As students study through another semester of remote learning, a petition is calling Principal Patrick Deane and Provost Mark Green to take additional measures of academic accommodations.  The petition states that Queen’s implemented the measure of providing a pass/fail grading option to Winter 2020 and Spring 2020 courses, but has not presented this modified grading structure for the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms.   The petition had been signed by 770 students at the time of publication. The petition pointed to the measures taken by other universities accommodating academic performance during the pandemic including Carleton, Concordia, Dalhousie, Laurentian, McGill, University of Toronto, University of Manitoba, and University of Ottawa. 

Queen s identifies one new case of COVID-19 in residence

Photo:  Queen’s reported one new case of COVID-19 in residence on Thursday.  The University marked all other cases of COVID-19 in the Queen’s community resolved, according to its COVID-19 tracker. There has been a total of 88 cases identified since Aug. 31, including 10 in residence.  Students looking to get tested for COVID-19 can book an appointment at Queen’s Satellite COVID-19 Assessment Centre in Mitchell Hall through Student Wellness Services (SWS).  The service, which is open Monday to Friday, has completed 171 tests as of Jan. 19 since reopening for the winter semester on Jan. 11. In the fall semester, SWS administered a total of 3,241 tests. 

ASUS seeks increased student fees to fund ASUS 130 proposals

Credit:  Journal File Photo Students can expect to see a proposed ASUS fee increase on their referendum ticket this coming February.   The increase is intended to fund ASUS 130, a package of proposed reforms named in honour of ASUS’ 130th anniversary. The proposals will be voted on by ASUS Assembly if the fee increase passes at referendum in February.  “Arts and Science have grown a lot over the past 5-10 years […] and ASUS needs to grow with it,” David Niddam-Dent, ASUS president, said in an interview with  The Journal.  On the referendum ticket are two fee proposals: a $4.76 increase to the $26.79 mandatory ASUS fee and the establishment of a $2.75 ASUS Orientation fee.

Through virtual education and contactless product drives, Queen’s Period is continuing to raise awareness about menstrual inequality and reduce period poverty during the pandemic. “The biggest issue that people are facing right now is financial insecurity,” Renée Davies, one of Queen’s Period co-chairs, said in an interview with 

New Engineering fellowship offers $25,000 to Indigenous & Black PhD students

“What are engineers? They design solutions; usually technological, but otherwise solutions to meet needs in society. That has to be framed from a diverse perspective, otherwise, the solutions will be less than ideal.” Deluzio explained that, to have more Indigenous and Black students come to Queen’s, more Indigenous and Black professors are needed to represent the student population.  “The biggest way we can influence [having more Black and Indigenous professors] is to hire more professors, but we also need to increase the pipeline,” he said. “We need to increase the number of Black and Indigenous professors in the community, and in order to do that we need to have more Black and Indigenous PhD students.”
