TODAY March 11, 2021 The African Centre for Justice and Human Right (ACJHR) led by Barrister Nduka Edede Chinwendu has lauded the Central Bank of Nigeria for its Healthcare Sector Research and Development Intervention Scheme (HSRDIS). Under the HSRDIS, grants are provided to researchers and healthcare institutions for the development of vaccines, drugs and herbal medicines. The ACJHR sees this move by the CBN as a pathway to healthcare security for all Nigerians. Like other policies earlier initiated by the CBN under the leadership of its governor, Godwin Emefiele, she said the organization views this as another well-thought-out policy that will impact positively on the nation and all Nigerians. ....

The council, which is made up of the Arewa Consultative Youth Movement, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youth Movement, Niger Delta Youth Council, Oduduwa Youths and Middle Belt Youths, says the move will make Nigeria a global vaccine development and medical tourism hub in future. A statement by Nwada Ike Chiamaka,Ohanaeze Secretary General and Head of Coalition Secretariat,said,”This is clear from the statement credited to the apex bank that it received over 286 proposals from the public for grants under the scheme.” ....

CBN governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this, in Abuja, yesterday, while disbursing the sum of N253.54 million to five researchers for the development of Nigerian COVID-19 vaccines and vaccines for other diseases. Mr. Emefiele said: “The CBN has over time emphasized the need for us to move from a consumer-based economy to a more productive economy. To this, the bank has developed intervention programmes and schemes across various sectors including the health sector. ....

The scheme is part of the apex bank’s policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic to spur the development of vaccines and drugs.
