Son Volt to headline free Manitowoc Metro Jam summer concert in August

View Comments MANITOWOC - Manitowoc s free-admission Metro Jam will return for the 42nd year Aug. 20-21 with headliners Son Volt. The concert series includes nine diverse acts over two days and is held in Washington Park, 1115 Washington St., downtown Manitowoc. Son Volt takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 21. According to a news release: 2020 was not quite what Jay Farrar was expecting for the 25th anniversary of the band he started in 1995 after leaving the seminal group Uncle Tupelo, whose No Depression album helped define the alt-country and Americana genre. Still based in St. Louis, It kinda makes sense as a central location for touring because all the interstates connect through here,  says Farrar, who was born in Belleville, Illinois, where he formed Uncle Tupelo with his high school classmate Jeff Tweedy. We had similar musical interests and took it from there,  he says.

Manitowoc Rapids: Tractor trailer overturns, spilling manure and fuel

MANITOWOC RAPIDS - A driver sustained minor injuries Tuesday morning after his tractor trailer, which was carrying a load of manure, overturned at the intersection of U.S. Highway 10 and County Highway T. A news release from Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig said deputies and emergency personnel responded to the scene at around 8:39 a.m. Tuesday. The release said preliminary investigation showed a 39-year-old man from Manitowoc was driving the 2001 Mack truck east on U.S. Highway 10 and while trying to turn north on County Highway T, the tractor trailer overturned into the northeast ditch. Some manure and diesel fuel leaked from the vehicle into a privately owned reservation pond near the intersection, the release said.

Manitowoc s Grow It Forward expands growing season with new greenhouse

MANITOWOC - The success of Grow It Forward just keeps growing new roots and fresh blooms. The nonprofit, which runs a community garden, kitchen and food pantry, now has added a greenhouse to its operations to extend its programming year-round. “I feel so fortunate we are able to do this,” said Amber Daugs, who launched and operates the organization. “It is truly a blessing and a community effort.” Financial help from the city of Manitowoc, a grant from the West Foundation and a whole lot of volunteer time and building supply donations helped to bring a vision of a greenhouse to the Community Garden area, 2344 S. 14th St., to life, she said. A ribbon-cutting was held Thursday, and seedlings are already growing in their new home.
