Mike DeWine’s proposal for Ohio’s next two-year budget includes $10 million in grants to help local police departments especially cash-strapped smaller agencies buy and operate body cameras. He is also proposing doubling the amount of money put into the Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center in order to create two new divisions in Toledo and Cincinnati where analysts can comb through data from cell phones and other devices to assist in drug trafficking investigations. Currently, just 185 out of about 900 local police departments in the state use body cameras and comply with the state’s minimum protocols for their operation. Many of those currently with such programs are among the largest departments in the state. ....
