San Diego Pride honors LGBTQIA+ leaders at Spirit of Stonewall Rally

San Diego LGBT Pride honored members of the LGBTQIA+ community Friday night in Hillcrest at its annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally as part of ongoing Pride festivities.
The rally is named after and honors those who rose up against police brutality in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.
San Diego Pride leaders said the “origins of the global Pride movement can trace their roots” to what’s often called the Stonewall uprising or Stonewall riots.
“Why we’re here today is because of an uprising,” Marcus Bush, a city councilmember in National City who is bisexual, said during his keynote speech at the rally. “An uprising against a hateful, homophobic and transphobic society. An uprising against police forces who implement our society’s hateful, homophobic (and) transphobic laws.” ....

San Diego honors missing and murdered Indigenous women

Keely Linton knows first-hand about the abuse suffered by Indigenous women.
She experienced domestic abuse, and she saw that violence reflected in the experiences of family and friends, and through her advocacy work.
But because of lapses in reporting and a lack of coordination between tribal, county and federal governments, Linton who is Íipay and Cupeno Native from the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians said accurate, local data is hard to come by.
“There’s just a lack of research and collective data to really know how many have been missing, how many have been murdered,” Linton said. “It’s really not something that has really been tracked properly.” ....

Buildings To Be Lit For Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

SAN DIEGO, CA Several of San Diego s most prominent sites will be lit in red Wednesday evening in honor of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day.
Balboa Park s Botanical Building and lily pond, the County of San Diego Administration Center and the San Diego Convention Center will be illuminated in red starting at 5 p.m. A vigil is planned at 7 p.m. at the Botanical Building located at 1549 El Prado.
Other Tribal Nation representatives will also raise a special flag at the County Administration Center in honor of the missing and murdered. ....
