Worcesteria: Moose on the loose!

Worcester Magazine
Moose on the loose - Anyone who has read my work can probably pick up that I like animals. Soon after starting as a writer at Worcester Magazine, I joined a Facebook group called Wildlife of Worcester County and Beyond. In the group, members post photos of wildlife in the area, along with the occasional photo “beyond” or outside the county. But it’s the local shots that interest me most, and learning about the different species we share the area with. What I didn’t expect over the last week was a minor spike in moose photos in my Facebook feed. At first I thought they were part of the beyond  category but they were geotagged in the backyards of Rutland and Barre. I know that Maine and in general Northern New England have a healthy moose population, but for them to be walking through backyards was something I thought only happened up in the Yukon. The good people at WWCB begged to differ. In fact, I checked back in the Telegram and found a piece fr ....

Worcesteria: Rush Limbaugh is gone, but we're stuck with his influence

Worcester Magazine
RUSH TO JUDGEMENT: When the recent death of conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh was mentioned on Facebook Wednesday, all I can think of was, “But who will Jim Polito emulate now?” Clearly, the WTAG radio personality was thinking the same thing, calling Limbaugh “the GOAT” on a Facebook Live post mourning his passing. Much like Boston s Howie Carr (and arguably, to a lesser degree, local radio personality Jordan Levy), Polito aped Limbaugh s ill-mannered, low-blow sort of media presentation and often brought mud-flinging and mean-spirited insults into local media and politics, perhaps reaching its apex with the 2012 feud between himself and now-retired Telegram & Gazette columnist Dianne Williamson, as chronicled by Worcester Magazine s own Janice Harvey, who saw the real life blow-up between the two at a WoMag Best of Worcester” event: “The verbal head-butting that occurred between these two has been brewing for years,” wrote Harvey, “th ....

Worcesteria: Worcester police all the buzz after revelations

Worcester Magazine
COP TALK: I wonder if anyone in authority in Worcester has ever regretted saying something more than Worcester Police Chief Steven M. Sargent probably regrets saying, “In my 35 years I have not observed racism in the department. We would not allow it. It has been practically a sport for armchair investigators, bloggers and journalists to turn up incidents and allegations of police brutality and institutional racism with the department, much of which has been chronicled in this column. So it probably shouldn t be surprising that the biggest social media buzz of the past few days has been Brad Petrishen s article for the Telegram & Gazette, “Despite chief s claim, Worcester investigated racist police incidents,” which highlights six investigations of racial complaints in the past decade, as detailed in documents provided after a public records request by the newspaper. As has been the hallmark of the ongoing public dialog between the Worcester Police D ....

While leading one of the state’s most important environmental organizations, Barbara J. Erickson looked back with reverence and ahead with anticipation.
“We are always passing the baton to the next generation,” she said at the Trustees of Reservations annual meeting in 2019.
Ms. Erickson, who was 42 when she died of cancer on Jan. 15, played a key role statewide among those who preserve the open space jewels of the past and unearth new gems for the future. ....

Worcesteria: An incomplete history of corporate predation in Worcester

Worcester Magazine
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Reading accounts by Telegram City Hall reporter Steve Foskett and former Worcesteria columnist Bill Shaner about the Planning Board review of the proposed Amazon Warehouse at the site of the deceased Greendale Mall, I was struck by the situation s familiarity. Corporate predators such as Amazon have long insinuated their selves into Worcester, as they have almost everywhere in the country, usually scoring tax credits for promising jobs that always turn out to be insufficient and underwhelming. Amazon, particularly, has had issues with low pay and back-breaking labor conditions, so it s easy to see why many want no part of them, although those same people aren t canceling their Prime subscriptions. (Mine just recommended Rules for Radicals by Saul D. Alinsky. I think our corporate overlords have developed a sense of humor.) But as Shaner points out, none of that s the purview of the Planning Board, so the warehouse is probably goin ....
