Bridport woman to represent UK in World Slam Poetry competition | Bridport and Lyme Regis News


Kathryn Jeanes, who uses the stage name Kathryn O Driscoll, won the UK Slam Championship in March.
Kathryn, who grew up in Bridport, will now move on to represent the country in the World Slam Poetry competition taking place this week in Paris. The competition will culminate on Sunday, May 16. Kathryn’s heat in the world slam will go ahead online this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Kathryn is a spoken word poet, writer and activist who talks openly about disabilities, mental health and LBTQIA+ issues and gender politics in her wide range of work.
Having grown up in Bridport and attending St Ronan’s, St Mary’s, St Catherine’s schools and Beaminster comprehensive, she is now living in Bath. ....

Leap of faith: Asma Elbadawi shows that Muslim women can jump

There were 2,000 people waiting expectantly as Asma Elbadawi stood staring out, heart pounding, hands shaking.
She was trying to remember the words to her poetry - along with what had compelled her to share them with such a large, live audience.
“I came off that stage, went to the hotel, looked at myself in the mirror, and I started crying,” she tells
The National. “I just remember thinking, ‘Wow. A lot of people told you you re going to fail and look at you now.’”
Buoyed by her initial success, spoken word performance soon became a therapeutic means of unravelling the world for Elbadawi. She began to make a name for herself and decided to use that platform to challenge a ban on hijabs that effectively sidelined Muslim women in the sport she loved. ....
