Covid-19 costs hospitality £100bn in sales

Hospitality businesses suffered a £100.2bn drop in sales from pre-pandemic levels in the 15 months since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the latest UKHospitality Quarterly Tracker with CGA reveals.
Prolonged closures and severe trading restrictions limited total sector sales in the 12 months to end-June 2021 to an estimated £59.8bn down by £72bn from the total of £131.9bn in the 12 months to end-June 2019.
Adding on the second quarter of 2020, this brings total sales in the last 15 months to £64.4bn, which equates to £100.2bn below the total of £164.6bn in the 15-month period to June 2019.

The latest quarterly figures are a notable improvement on recent year-on-year comparatives, following the easing of restrictions for restaurants, pubs, bars, hotels and entertainment venues since mid-April, compared to a period when hospitality was almost totally shut in 2020. ....

Coronavirus pandemic wipes out £80.8bn of sales in hospitality over 12 months

The Covid-19 pandemic has wiped a staggering £80.8bn off hospitality’s sales in just 12 months, the latest edition of the UKHospitality Quarterly Tracker with CGA reveals.
It shows sales from the start of April 2020 to the end of March 2021 totalled £46bn, down by 64% on £126.8bn in the previous 12 months.
The drop of £80.8bn is equivalent to around £220m of sales lost every day, or more than £9m every hour.
This collapse in trade fall reflects the waves of national and local lockdowns and severe trading restrictions that the UK’s hospitality businesses have endured since the pandemic began.
Many venues have been unable to trade for the majority of the past year, and all restaurants, pubs and bars have been limited to deliveries and takeaways throughout the first quarter of 2021. ....

The Market Picks Up Where It Left Off

Small caps stayed green while breadth lagged, and the S&P 500 has gone red for four days straight now, can we rally?

The market picked up on Monday, where it left off last week. By that I mean we saw the small-cap index, the Russell 2000, do some heavy lifting last week by rallying 1%, but we also saw breadth flat. A divergence.
On Monday the market might have turned lower, but even when it was higher in the early going, breadth was lagging. The Russell 2000 ended the day still in the green (barely, but green is green) and breadth was decidedly negative. That s what I mean: What started last week continued this week. ....

Finally, the Nasdaq Slips

Finally, the Nasdaq Slips
After 11 days of up for the QQQs, we saw some down. Let s check under the hood to see what happened, and what to expect next.

It seems Nasdaq does have the ability to go down, after all.
I suppose 11 straight days for the Invesco QQQs (QQQ) coupled with that Daily Sentiment Index (DSI) over 90 and all that speculation we discussed from late last week was enough to push it over the edge and force a correction.
So how was breadth, you wonder? Why New York Stock Exchange breadth was flat as a pancake. Yes, the S&P 500 was down 29 points. The Russell lost just shy of 1% and breadth was flat. That is quite an accomplishment. Net volume (up minus down volume) was red, but quite frankly it was worse on Monday than it was on Wednesday. ....
