Dževad Pajazetović, a former Bosnian soldier during that nation s 1990s civil war, moved to the United States in 1998 and settled in Waukee with his wife and children. He became a U.S. citizen in 2004.
But in March, he was arrested at his job at Titan Tire by federal agents responding to an extradition request from Bosnia. Pajazetović was convicted of murder in absentia at a 1999 trial that his attorney says he wasn t even aware of, and Bosnia now wants him returned to serve his 11-year prison sentence. ....

U.S. State Department has final say in Iowan's extradition to Bosnia


Dževad Pajazetović, a former Bosnian soldier during that nation s 1990s civil war, moved to the United States in 1998 and settled in Waukee with his wife and children. He became a U.S. citizen in 2004.

Pajazetović was convicted of murder in absentia at a 1999 trial that his attorney says he wasn t even aware of, and Bosnia now wants him returned to serve his 11-year prison sentence.
Under federal law and the relevant treaty, the first step in extradition requires a U.S. judge to confirm there is sufficient evidence to sustain the allegation, after which the State Department has the discretion to grant or deny the extradition request. After a hearing in May, Judge Helen Adams ruled Tuesday that there is sufficient evidence for the State Department to extradite Pajazetović  if it wants to. ....
