A recent court ruling striking down a national eviction moratorium could put pressure on Virginia officials to dole out hundreds of millions of dollars in rental assistance.
The ruling came as nearly 50,000 Virginians say they could face eviction in the next few months.
The moratorium will continue for now while the Justice Department appeals the court’s decision.

Months after their layoffs, many are still waiting for their unemployment benefits to begin, Seay told me. For others, benefits started but were mysteriously cut off. And getting an explanation for either is often impossible, he added.
On one day last week, Seay said he made 126 phone calls to the agency’s toll-free line on behalf of claimants who for one reason or another haven’t received benefits they believe were due. Not once among all those calls was Seay able to talk to a human at the VEC, he said. ....

RICHMOND, Va. Ni Kin became a permanent resident in 2002 at 70 years old, but she was unable to work after moving from Myanmar to Virginia due to mobility problems.
Kin required more medical attention related to her condition as she aged, but was unable to see a doctor because she didn’t have insurance, according to her grandson Tin Myint. Kin didn’t qualify for Medicaid due to a state rule requiring permanent residents to present 10 years of work history to use public health insurance, Myint said. Kin also did not qualify for no-premium Medicare, since she never worked in the country and does not qualify for Social Security benefits. ....
