Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) has signed a controversial bill ending a ban on abortion coverage for insurance plans offered through the state s health benefits exchange.
This measure means that by law, Virginia taxpayers will be funding abortions, Catholic News Agency reports.
Northam signed House Bill 1896 and Senate Bill 1276, overriding abortion coverage restrictions established in 2011 during Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell s administration.

Virginia Repeals Ban on Abortion Coverage Through Exchange Plans

Although the legislation will allow insurers to provide these services, it will not require them to do so.
The current restriction on abortion coverage through Virginia’s health insurance exchange was put in place in 2011 during Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell’s administration after the Affordable Care Act was passed. Federal funds can’t cover abortion costs due to the Hyde Amendment, except for specific circumstances.
“The current ban on providing abortion care for private insurance companies does nothing to promote or protect the health and safety of anyone it’s purely politically based,” said Rae Pickett, communications director for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia. ....

ACROSS AMERICA Only a handful of weeks into the 2021 legislative session, the ongoing policy wars against abortion and the facilities that provide them are already heating up in several states across the country.
It s been nearly a half-century since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark ruling in the case of Roe v. Wade, which granted women a constitutional right to obtain an abortion. Yet in the decades since that ruling, states have spent significant time battling its provisions. ....

Virginia’s liberal-led legislature is set to deal with abortion in the 2021 legislative session, and pro-life activists are bracing for the political and moral fight.
Olivia Turner of the Virginia Society for Human Life tells One New Now there is now a push to use taxpayers’ funds, and private insurers, to pay for abortion coverage.
A second bill would require that Obamacare health care exchanges offered in the state must pay for abortions as well.
The Virginia General Assembly was gavelled in Jan. 13 for a 30-day session. ....
