Securities Commission Malaysia - Open For Application: Fellowship At Oxford Centre For Islamic Studies

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) is inviting aspiring scholars to apply for the 10
th Visiting Fellowship of the Scholar in Residence (SIR) Programme in Islamic Finance at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) UK, for the academic year of 2021/22. 
 
This Programme, part of the strategic partnership between the SC and OCIS, is open to academicians or practitioners with extensive experience in Islamic finance and/or a closely-related discipline, and who can demonstrate competence in conducting independent applied research.
The successful applicant is expected to take up residence for one academic year at the OCIS starting October 2021, to conduct applied research on contemporary issues relevant to the Islamic capital market.  ....

Adenekan, Olumide, Tchamda set for April 'AWFLink Up'

Shola Adenekan, Olaniyan Olumide and Mariette Tchamda will be on the second edition of theAWFLinkUp via Zoom, billed for April 25 from 4- 6 p.m. Nigerian Time.
The trio will have a conversation on – “Where Would African Literature Be Without Writers’ Groups ?”
Adenekan, who will moderate the event, is an Assistant Professor at ASCA.

He is also a recipient of a major grant from the European Commission, in which he will be leading a team of researchers – as a Principal Investigator – to study the networks of Yoruba Print Culture.
He has recently been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at the University of Ghana, Accra, by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). His book, “African Literature in the Digital Age”, has just been published by James Currey. ....

Holding Marriage Hostage: Male Guardianship in Muslim Women’s Application for Marriage in Contemporary Malaysia

Under Malaysia’s Islamic Family Law, Muslim women may only marry with the signed authorization of a male guardian (
wali), usually their biological father. Drawing on court observations and archival research conducted in the Syariah Court of the Malaysian State of Kelantan, this talk examines “
wali refusal” cases, where women’s right to marry is held hostage by estranged fathers who refuse to sign their daughters’ marriage application. Nurul first argues that the Islamic concept of “male guardianship” as interpreted and practiced by the Malaysian Syariah system often clashes with a more grievous reality, in which the bonds of kinship in Malay families are at times fragile. Second, she illustrates how the notion of “male guardianship” limits the autonomy and agency accorded to women, compelling many Malay women ....
