In the past year, the Wayne County Community Endowment awarded 31 grants totaling $95,890 to support nonprofits that serve area residents, with $33,750 distributed from its Emergency Relief Fund to address local needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The pandemic greatly strained the operations of many nonprofits providing critical services to Wayne County residents and we knew that our role was to make sure these services would continue,” said C.J. Britt, advisory board chair. “We are grateful for all of the contributions from those in our community who helped to make the emergency support possible.” ....

Alling Coverlet Museum Displays World-Class Collection

One of Historic Palmyraâs five museums, the Alling Coverlet Museum in Palmyra, New York, displays an impressive 500 bed-sized coverlets, along with a few quilts. A coverlet is a loom-woven bed covering usually made of cotton or linen.
Bonnie J. Hays, executive director of Historic Palmyra, said that equipment developed in 1804 by Frenchman Joseph Marie Jacquard, the Jacquard loom attachment, enabled people to make coverlets in whatever creative design they wished. By inserting punched cards into the attachment, they could make coverlets in custom designs, which launched a whole industry of traveling coverlet makers.
âYou would have to lay it out with graph paper,â Hays said. âItâs kind of like needlepoint. Before that time, people could weave them. People wove baskets during Jesusâ time.â ....

Each year at the Palmyra Historical Museum, we are reminded of a tragedy which had its 46th anniversary. You already know that it is a tragedy, so it is not something that we look forward to each year, but a happening we dread.
It was a cold and windy December night in the village of Palmyra when flames were noticed as they shot up from a small house at 132 Market St. Mother Anna and the six Breeden children were all soundly sleeping when the smoke billowed through the entire house. The time was about 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 20, 1964, and the flames were so hot and high that there was no way of escape. The fire alarm sounded, and all the firemen from Palmyra, Macedon and Marion came to help. ....

LYONS â She was a dynamo on the stage and in the directorâs chair, worked in films in Hollywood and abroad and found a way to make a county museum come alive.
However, it was something else that folks who knew Larry Ann Evans will always remember about her, said her son, Alex Calvo: Her laugh.
âYou can pick my mother out of the crowd just because of her laugh,â he said. âIt was that contagious and that unique.â
Evans died Friday, Dec. 18 after a nearly two-year battle with cancer. She was 60.
Those who knew her describe Evans as a gifted actor and director who could have worked Broadway, but returned to the region she called home to take care of ailing parents and raise her son. Evans offered her talents to high school and community theater productions, directing shows at Geneva and Lyons high schools. She was an integral part of the Geneva Theatre Guild as an actress, director, producer and governing board member. ....
