UNION â A first-person narrative is propelling a young Union essay writer to first place finishes she may never forget. Sawyer Shoemaker is a national finalist in the sixth-grade division of the 2021 Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest after winning a trio of competitions. âThis is so exciting,â the student said. Sawyer, 12, submitted her essay Dec. 19, 2020, to the regional Lone Pine Tree Chapter of the DAR. The essay only won state but placed first at the district level, making her a national finalist. âI was really surprised,â said Sawyer, a homeschool student who is the daughter of Lance and Stephanie Shoemaker. ....

Jan 7, 2021 Courtesy photo Four students from the AuTrain-Onota School participated in this yearâs DAR American History Essay Contest, chaired by Onagomingkway Chapter Chair Sarah Smart. This yearâs topic, âThe Boston Massacre,â recognizes the 250th anniversary of the event that plunged the thirteen colonies into the American Revolution. Pictured standing are Noah Linne, 8th grade winner and Zoe Marcotte, 7th grade winner; with Isaac Merryman, 6th grade winner, and 8th grade participant Wyatt Merryman. The winners received bronze medals and all took home a certificate and cash prize. The DAR American History Essay Contest is open to all fifth through eighth grade students in public, parochial, private and home school situations. CLUB NEWS The Urbana Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met November 21 for the chapter’s first full remote meeting. Regent Snyder conducted a short “primer” on logistics of managing a Zoom meeting. She then called the meeting to order followed by the DAR opening ritual. The Pledge of Allegiance and American’s Creed were repeated by those participating virtually. Regent Snyder then read the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner. This was followed by the recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America. Those in attendance were Regent Kim Snyder, Associate member and State Regent, Kathy Dixon, Judy Brooks, Amber Cole (guest), Betty Driever, Janet Ebert, Jeanette Enyart, Jeanne Evans, Linda Fullerton, Judi Henson, Judith Kathary, Sue Maurice, Charlotte Roby (Associate member), Lana Seeberg, Becky Shultz, Megan Snyder, and Dona Tullis. ....
