Wyoming Bill For Election, Recall Of State Health Officer Filed

A bill that would make the position of Wyoming State Health Officer an elected office has been filed for the 2021 session of the Wyoming Legislature.
The bill would also include a provision for the recall of the state health officer.
You can read Senate File 95 here. It s sponsored by Sens. Bouchard, Driskill, French, James and McKeown and Representative(s) Baker, Bear, Burt, Fortner, Gray, Laursen, Styvar, Wharff, and Winter.
Currently, the state health officer is appointed by the governor, and there is no provision for a citizen recall of that office. Under Senate File 95, the State Health Officer would join the governor, treasurer, auditor, secretary of state, and state superintendent as statewide elected officials.

Tucked in the shadow of the Tetons, the town of Jackson, Wy., and surrounding Teton County is home to less than 25,000 fulltime residents, but annually hosts over 2.5 million visitors. The valley’s natural beauty attracts an influx of tourists, who in turn are responsible for roughly 30% of the region’s jobs and over $1 billion in annual revenue, but this year, visitors came with an unwelcome price tag for locals: “Every time in this pandemic that we’ve had an influx of visitation, whether that’s second homeowners, or people just coming for a weekend, it follows with an uptick in cases and hospitalizations” says Dr. Jeff Greenbaum, medical director at the Emergency Department for Saint John’s hospital and the Jackson Hole Mountain Ski Resort (JHMR) ski patrol.

Governor Tom Wolf announced his intention to nominate Alison Beam to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and named Dr. Wendy Braund Interim Acting Physician General.
“Alison Beam is a talented public servant who brings years of experience in health care policy and implementation to this position,” said Gov. Wolf. “Alison knows that a strong, widely available, and successful vaccination strategy is the path out of the pains of this pandemic. Her foremost and immediate focus will be on the strategic distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, making sure Pennsylvania receives as many doses as possible from the federal government, and that the Pennsylvania Department of Health coordinates with hospitals, health centers, county and local governments, and pharmacy partners to make this vaccine as widely available as possible to Pennsylvanians everywhere.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced Friday he will nominate two administration staff members to replace positions held by outgoing secretary of the Department of Health, Dr. Rachel Levine.
His Secretary of Health nominee Alison Beam is an attorney and health policy administrator who has served most recently as his deputy chief of staff. She assumes the role as acting health secretary on Monday.
In her role in the Wolf administration, Beam has coordinated initiatives and resources across Pennsylvania’s departments of Health, Human Services, Drug & Alcohol Programs, Aging and Insurance, as well as the Office of Advocacy and Reform, according to a press release.
