Wyoming’s public schools have long been a subject of derision for many Republican state lawmakers who claim they underperform. If such scrutiny leads to the constant improvement of our K-12 system, then I’m all for it.
But that’s not the solution the Legislature is considering. Instead, a committee charged with determining how much the state spends on education wants to cut funding by an estimated $250 million over the next three years.
That’s like complaining of a headache and then “solving” the problem by cutting off your head. If the topic wasn’t so serious, their response.

CHEYENNE A bill being brought forth to the Wyoming Legislature would amend the Wyoming Constitution, requiring electors’ consent prior to imposing taxes.
The bill, which is sponsored by District 13 Senator Tom James, (R-Rock Springs), is seeking a Wyoming Constitutional amendment to Senate Joint Resolution SJ0001. Those co-sponsoring the bill are Senators Bo Biteman, Anthony Bouchard, Tim French and Troy McKeown, and Representatives Bill Fortner, Chuck Gray, Dan Laursen, Rachel Rodriguez-Williams, and Robert Wharff.
“I am sponsoring this bill in order to give a voice to the people that they currently do not have because when these important issues come up for discussion, it is Monday through Friday during work hours and people just do not have the time to make it to have their voice heard,” James said.

Democracy attacked
There are so many pillars of our fragile democracy under attack right now. Our free press, copied and admired all over the world, has become âthe enemy of the people.â This is the phrase used repeatedly by authoritarian rulers, e.g. Stalin, and now Trump. There is no democracy without a free press. The press has been attacked repeatedly, verbally and with violence, since Trump took office.
Science too is under attack. Sowing doubt, and promoting liberty without responsibility, is wrong. Maybe our new senator heard about the rally at the Cheyenne Capitol building screaming to remove all of the life-saving methods to curb the growth of COVID-19. Lummis was cheered, Cheney booed. Fake blood was thrown on the Cheyenne Health Departmentâs doors. Our health care workers and those around the state and country are threatened daily because of misinformation from the Republican party. Our top U.S. epidemiologist now needs security. Our science and medicine t
