Just In: Dunya Group acquires 70% shares of WorldCall Nayab KhanLast Updated: Feb 18, 2021 Dunya Group has bought 70% shares in WorldCall from Omantel for an undisclosed amount, we have checked with sources who were part of the deal. Early reports suggest that deal between Dunya Media Group and Omantel that had 70% shares in WorldCall was signed yesterday and details are likely to be made public during next few days. It merits mentioning here that 12% shares in WorldCall reside with Salman Taseer (late) while another 18% shares are floated publicly in Pakistan Stock Exchange. Omantel had bought 65% controlling stakes in WorldCall in 2008 for $193 million. It later bought preferred shares of the company as well. ....
87% of Pakistanis Have Internet Access: PTA The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has claimed that Internet services are available to 87 percent of the population in Pakistan at the lowest rates in the region. The demand for Internet services grew immensely in Pakistan during the lockdown in 2020 due to increased use of social media and communications applications, video streaming, and online sessions. However, the quality of the services remains comprised and has been termed as ‘poor’ in many areas by users. Reportedly, a supportive regulatory environment, effective competition, the presence of innovative international telecom operators, and the continued resolve of the regulator to harness advanced technologies has resulted in widespread availability of Internet services to over 87 percent of the population at one of the lowest rates in the region; and mobile data prices have declined by only 0.70 percent of the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, wh ....
PTCL in talks with govt for licence renewal Telecom company’s licence expired on December 31, 2020 KARACHI: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) - which is known for its wired services - reported on Friday that its integrated licence, which was awarded for a period of 25 years, expired on December 31, 2020, according to a bourse filing. PTCL was required to get its licence renewed by the time of expiry, but that did not happen. The delay in renewal would, however, not result in disconnection of services to the end-users as the firm was in talks with the government. It remained unclear as to why the renewal was delayed, though The Express Tribune reached out to the authorities concerned. ....
