When the Victorian border closure with NSW was announced late in the afternoon on New Year’s Eve it appears that there was no consideration given all of the Victorians like us who had driven to Queensland before Christmas for a long-awaited reunion with loved ones.
We met many couples like us on the way who were headed to various locations in Queensland. When the announcement was made, we had virtually no hope of being able to get to the border in time. It would have meant packing up and leaving immediately and trying to condense a three-day drive into 24 hours of non-stop driving with little chance of finding accommodation on the way. We are seniors and such a prospect was just too difficult as well as very dangerous. ....

His co-author, Professor Gilbert, said: An independent review, to be credible, has to have some sort of official standing. It has to be commissioned by someone â who else would commission it other than the department that is responsible for aged care?
It made sense not to include the regulator in the terms of reference because that would have been too big an undertaking, Professor Gilbert said.
A spokesman for federal Aged Care Minister Richard Colbeck said the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission had been excluded from the review because its purpose was to determine what caused the outbreaks at St Basilâs and Epping Gardens, and to learn from those events. He said the actions of the commission had been thoroughly examined by the aged care royal commission, and a special Senate committee on COVID-19. ....

Report into St Basil's and Epping Gardens COVID-19 outbreaks highlights failures

Two nursing homes at the centre of Melbourne s deadly COVID-19 outbreak were inadequately prepared for emergencies and had insufficient infection prevention and control procedures, and the surge workforce sent in to help had not worked in aged care before and was unsure what to do .
An independent review of the outbreaks at St Basil’s Homes for the Aged and Heritage Care’s Epping Gardens, conducted by Professor Lyn Gilbert and Adjunct Professor Alan Lilly, found the homes had deteriorated to a shocking state during the crisis.
