Targeting 12 modifiable risk factors could reduce dementia cases by 40%: Experts

Doha: The Lancet Commission 2020 report on ‘Dementia prevention, intervention, and care’ has estimated that the number of dementia cases worldwide could be reduced by 40% if 12 risk factors for the condition could be fully eliminated.
Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) National Dementia Risk Reduction team is working to raise public awareness of 12 modifiable risk factors that have been identified as potentially having a significant impact on a person’s overall health and their propensity for getting some form of dementia later in life. The risk factors include less education in early life. Hearing loss, Traumatic brain injury, Hypertension as well as Diabetes and Obesity in middle life. Smoking, Depression, Social isolation, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol and air pollution make up the remaining risk factors. ....

Hontiveros said that as the country faces a surge in COVID-19 cases, it is necessary for the government to create a national referral hospital for senior citizens with major health concerns, especially those from poor and near-poor families.
The senator said passage of the bill she filed Senate Bill No. 2086 is urgent as cases of COVID-19 continues to increase and can prove to be “fatal for many more seniors.” “If we have a (Philippine) Heart Center and Lung Center, we can also establish a Philippine Geriatric Center that would provide our grandfathers and grandmothers who would contract COVID-19 and other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer access to free medical services,” Hontiveros said in a statement. ....

Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a bill that will create a one-stop dedicated public hospital that will service the health needs, free of charge, of the country growing number of senior citizens as the country faces a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Hontiveros recently filed Senate Bill No. 2086, which mandates the creation of the Philippine Geriatric Center, which will become the national referral hospital for senior citizens with major health concerns, especially those from poor and near-poor families. She added that the bill was an urgent necessity now that cases of COVID-19 are on the rise yet again, which she says can prove to be fatal for many more seniors. ....
