That’s the message behind a new San Antonio-led social media campaign that aims to raise awareness about the risks of domestic violence during the holidays and direct victims to resources throughout the community. “All the research about family violence shows that violence increases when people are under stress,” said Jenny Hixon, violence prevention manager at the Metropolitan Health District. “That’s why we decided that it’s important to get this messaging out there.” The campaign, unveiled this month in partnership with the Police Department and University Health, is part of a larger effort among city and county officials to address the increase in domestic violence injuries and fatalities in Bexar County. ....

San Francisco gun buyback gets 228 weapons off the streets Published 228 firearms were turned in at the event today in San Francisco. SAN FRANCISCO - More than 225 guns were returned Saturday during an annual gun buyback program in San Francisco. The event was organized by the San Francisco Mayor s Office of Violence Prevention Services, the San Francisco Police Department and the United Playaz, a San Francisco-based violence prevention and youth development organization. United Playaz founder Rudy Corpuz said people turned in 228 guns, including 8 assault rifles during the four-hour event Saturday. Gun owners who turned in their weapons were paid $100 for handguns and $200 for assault rifles. ....

Though the pandemic has helped mitigate violent crimes in San Francisco, gun violence still remains a large problem in the city. 2020 alone saw a 32 percent uptick of reporting gunfire shots in San Francisco over last year; Oakland has seen a 47 percent jump over the past twelve months a worrying trend toward increased gun violence in the East Bay.
