Pay equity, domestic violence issues matter in Mississippi: commentary

View Comments
While we monitored various issues related to our mission during the recent Mississippi legislative session, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., Central Mississippi Chapter supported matters concerning pay equity and domestic violence through raising awareness.
We celebrate House Bill 695 Domestic Violence Fund which helps stop the violence by removing the matching funds requirement for the State Domestic Violence Fund. The bill was signed into law Gov. Tate Reeves.
Mississippi, however, is the only state without a equal pay law; therefore we will continue to support legislation purporting requirement of equal pay for equal work by women and men. ....

On Policing, Data Shows Citywide Gains, But Room To Improve

Jacqueline Larma

It’s no surprise that policing is a key issue in Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s bid for a third term. Protests over police misconduct in Pittsburgh and across the country came to a head on his front porch in August. Activists demanded answers about the way police responded to previous demonstrations, arresting protesters and deploying so-called less-lethal crowd dispersal tactics.
After a heated exchange, Peduto went inside, and police disbanded the demonstrators. But the issue itself hasn’t gone anywhere. But a look at annual Bureau of Police reports and other yearly data collected by the city suggest that in many ways, Peduto has improved the way the city polices its streets … even though the numbers show some problems remain unaddressed. ....

'A force for good': How Black voices say they will carry momentum from 2020

One man was Black, the other was white.
One gasped for air as the other man, a uniformed police officer, kneeled down on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
The deadly Memorial Day weekend encounter between George Floyd, a Black man, and white Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin became the year’s second viral event behind the coronavirus pandemic. Footage captured on cellphone and surveillance cameras quickly spread on social media and set the stage or ignited a match for a summer of unrest across the country as Americans of all races, ages and creeds took to the streets to rail against racial injustice and police violence. ....

A 2021 Pittsburgh budget adopted by city council Monday is a “stop-gap” plan that is balanced and will need to be revised depending upon whether federal covid relief is ever approved for cities, Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle said.
Although it doesn’t include a 50% cut in funding to the police department, the spending plan represents the city’s response to calls for police reform, increased funding for social services and housing, Lavelle said.
“Residents have spoken loud and clear to council that the budget is a reflection of our moral values… I believe this year’s budget begins to do just that,” he said. ....

Pittsburgh City Council is set to vote Monday on a 2021 budget that doesn’t make any of the cuts to police funding that some residents have repeatedly requested.
The $564 million spending plan introduced Nov. 9 by Mayor Bill Peduto doesn’t increase taxes. However, if federal coronavirus relief packages are not approved, more than 630 jobs nearly $26 million in cuts will need to be made in July to keep the city afloat, officials said. ....
