Will there be art, performances, exhibits in 2021? Berkshire museums say absolutely

A summer of galleries filled with vibrant art is once again on the horizon.
And this year, museum officials are confident the upcoming exhibitions — several of which were postponed during 2020 — will happen.
“We are looking to a brighter and uplifting 2021 and are excited by our eagerly-awaited new feature exhibition, ‘Enchanted: A History of Fantasy Illustration,’” said Laurie Norton Moffatt, Norman Rockwell Museum Director and CEO, in a recent email. “Several years in the making, and postponed from last summer, this exhibition gathers hundreds of works of fantastical art and outlines the history of Fantasy art from its roots in ancient mythological stories to the contemporary illustration of today: think ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Dungeons & Dragons.’” ....

Tasmania's Mona gets a major revamp – but will it lure the locals?

Last modified on Wed 30 Dec 2020 23.18 EST
As the old saying goes, or perhaps it was Belinda Carlisle, “Honey, leave a light on for me.”
During Hobart’s lockdown, the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) did just that with “spectra” – Ryoji Ikeda’s 15km tower of white light. A semi-regular fixture at the museum, now it loyally pierced the sky every Saturday night. Hobartians could see it from their windows, the weekly transmission of a message that might be pitched somewhere between “we come in peace” and that of the “hang on in there” kitten.
Writing in the Mercury newspaper in April – after a Covid outbreak in Tasmania that forced 5,000 people into 14-day quarantine – Mona owner David Walsh explained “hope needs a beacon”. ....

DiS meets Joanna Gruesome: "Misogyny in music is so prevalent" / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

Joanna Gruesome’s Alanna McArdle as she reflects on
Weird Sister, talks about sexism in music, and why you should think twice before calling them twee.
It’s been 7 months since the release of your debut album
Weird Sister, looking back on the whole process, how was it for you, and what have you learned as a band?
Alanna McArdle: Doing the album was fun more than anything, I think for most of us it was the first time we had recorded anything in a real studio so it felt very ‘real’ in a sense. It’s weird to me that it’s been almost a year. After we recorded it, it took almost a year to come out so it’s actually been a pretty long process and I hadn’t really realised. When it did finally come out I think we were all a little shocked and confused by its reception. We didn’t expect anyone to really listen to it or buy it, so getting the attention we got was very strange. Doing something like CMJ- which was I guess directly linked to the album’s rel ....

Best Case Scenario: DiS Meets dEUS / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

dEUS and all-round
bon vivant, has excellent taste. This much is evident from the impressive spread laid out in their dressing room; Gauloises cigarettes, Spanish tempranillo, chilled Grey Goose, and a bottle of 16 year old Lagavulin, a whisky that connoisseurs note is an “intense, smoky-sweet single malt, with seaweed flavours and a huge, peppery finish.” I’ve been ushered backstage prior to the band’s soundcheck at Utrecht’s Tivoli Oudegracht, and they’ve yet to arrive. One by one they drift in from the early afternoon sunshine: violinist Klaas Janzoons heads straight for the red wine, bassist Alan Gevaert engages me in a conversation about footwear, while guitarist Mauro Pawlowski is mostly concerned with hunting down some coffee. Finally, there’s Barman himself, affable and carrying several full garment bags, keen to get things started. “We haven’t played for two months,” he confesses as they stride towards the stage, “so we have to run through basic ....

Discography reassessed: Bright Eyes in perspective / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

On August 4
Conor Oberst will release his new self-titled solo album, which was recorded in Tepoztlán, Mexico with a small group of musicians at the dawn of this year. In a relatively similar fashion to our reassessment of the Manic Street Preachers’ back catalogue earlier this year, DiS considers how a barely pubescent Oberst traversed from four-track recordings in the basement of his family home to standing at the cusp of unleashing one of 2008’s most anticipated records.
Almost every song Oberst has recorded since he was but a wee one is out there somewhere if you look hard enough. The chance, then, to appreciate his growth and increasing range - from the very, very beginning - is there. What follows is intended as exhaustive to a point though by no means definitive; rather a loosely autobiographical reassessment of key works. If you care to join… ....
