Over 30 Maimed and Killed Pelicans Deserve Justice

Goal: Find those responsible for maiming and killing over 30 brown pelicans.
A brown pelican was found with its humerus bone protruding through its skin, and its wing had been twisted several times around. In less than a year, more than 30 other pelicans have been found maimed or killed along the Southern California beach between San Clemente and Huntington Beach.
Historically, fishermen tend to have conflicts with pelicans, who they accuse of stealing their bait or interfering in their catch in other ways. It is suspected that foul play is involved in these incidents.
“There is a history of members of the public having issues with pelicans, particularly fishermen,” Elizabeth Wood from the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center stated. “Just based on that history, people are worrying that the same thing is happening again.” ....

Two more brown pelicans have been reported as dead on Orange County’s coast, prompting the Animal Legal Defense Fund to add to the reward for information on the perpetrators by $20,000.
This also brings the total number of injured pelicans discovered with broken wings between San Clemente and Huntington Beach to 34 since October.
The organization said that most pelicans did not survive their injuries and those that did required emergency surgery and long-term care. At least 22 of the pelicans died of their injuries, the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center reported last month.
The birds were classified as a federally endangered species in 1970, but were removed from the list in 2009. ....

Legal Advocacy Group Offers $25K for Pelican Attack Information – NBC Los Angeles

When the Animal Legal Defense Fund announced the $5,500 reward, a total of 32 birds had been mutilated along the coast between San Clemente and Huntington Beach over the course of eight months.
According to the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, at least 22 of the rescued pelicans had their wings broken so severely that bones came through the skin. The pinpointed, blunt trauma injuries, found consistently among all of the pelicans, led wildlife officials to believe the birds were attacked by humans.
Two more dead birds have since been found, totaling 34 wounded pelicans.
Most pelicans did not survive, and those who did needed emergency surgery and long-term care, the Animal Legal Defense Fund said in a statement. ....
