Design documents show the pending new transit garage to be built on Lathrop Street will be almost 57,000 square feet and will have a locker room, conference room, laundry area, showers, offices, supply rooms and 10 bus repair bays. The $28.1 million project of the Fairbanks North Star Borough is in the early design phase. Design documents by Design Alaska were obtained by the News-Miner via a public records request. The two-story building, with a mezzanine, will be 60 feet tall with an outdoor patio, two gravel storage yards and a bus washing area. An engineering report confirms that Hunter Elementary School sustained a partial roof collapse last month. A portion of the building is open for classes but itâs still not clear if the school will open as normal when the 2021-2022 school year begins in August, according to the Fairbanks North Star Borough public information officer. âWe are in the early stages of getting the design work complete for the final repair. We will have much better information to answer your questions in a few weeks,â PIO Lanien Livingston said in an emailed answer to questions. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly approved $26.3 million worth of capital spending on Thursday, postponed an ordinance to enact ranked choice voting and agreed to provide a minimum of $49 million to public schools. An ordinance adopting ranked choice voting, along with a substitute measure that would put it to a vote of the people, will come back before the assembly at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Seven public works projects were approved for construction, while three projects will go to design, according to a spreadsheet outlining the boroughâs Capital Improvement Program. The construction projects are part of a 10-year, $218 million plan established last year. The vote to continue momentum on the plan was unanimous. ....
