A car struck and killed retired Northwest Airlines pilot and longtime St. Paul resident Carl Simmons during his after-lunch walk Jan. 29 near his wintertime condo in Orange Beach, Ala. He was 82.
The tragic accident came practically 36 years to the day after Capt. Simmons heroically maneuvered a suddenly crippled Boeing 727 into a safe landing at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport narrowly avoiding a tragedy that easily could have claimed the lives of 52 passengers and nine crew members onboard Northwest Flight 573.

Timothy Waters, who started his FBI career in the Detroit office 20 years ago and helped investigate the infamous Underwear Bomber 10 years later, returns to head the office as special agent in charge. 
Waters most recently was deputy assistant director of the bureau s Critical Incident Response Group in Virginia.
His first focus in Detroit in 2000 was white-collar crime. After Sept. 11, 2001, he worked counterterrorism matters. In 2005-06, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to support military and intelligence community operations.
In 2007, Waters led a squad on Detroit’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF)  that focused on domestic terrorism. That work included investigating Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who attempted to blow up Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day in 2009 with explosives in his underwear. ....
